River Blindness (Onchocerciasis)

River blindness, also known as onchocerciasis, is a parasitic infection caused by the worm Onchocerca volvulus. The disease is transmitted through repeated bites from infected blackflies that breed near fast-flowing rivers and streams, primarily in parts of sub-Saharan Africa. Smaller numbers of cases have also occurred in areas of Latin America and Yemen.
