Retinal Laser Treatments

Retinal laser treatment can help seal retinal tears, treat abnormal retinal blood vessels, and reduce the risk of vision loss from conditions such as diabetic retinopathy, retinal tears, macular edema, and selected macular disorders. Most laser procedures are performed right in our office and take only a few minutes.

How Retinal Laser Works

A retinal laser uses a precisely focused beam of light to create tiny treatment spots on the retina. Depending on the condition, those spots can seal a tear, close leaking blood vessels, or reduce the retina’s oxygen demand so abnormal vessels stop growing. Before treatment, your eye is dilated and numbing drops are applied. Your retina specialist may place a special contact lens on the eye to focus the laser. You may see bright flashes of light and feel mild pressure or a brief sharp sensation, but most patients tolerate treatment very well.

After the laser, vision may be blurry for several hours because of dilation, and some patients notice light sensitivity or mild irritation. Most people return to normal activities within a day. Because your pupils will be dilated, plan to have someone drive you home.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does retinal laser hurt?

Most patients feel bright light and mild pressure or a brief ache rather than pain. Numbing drops are used, and treatment usually takes only a few minutes.

Will laser improve my vision?

Retinal laser is usually done to protect the vision you have and prevent worsening. Some conditions do improve after treatment, but the primary goal is stopping further damage.

Can I drive home after laser?

Your eye will be dilated and your vision blurry for several hours, so plan to have someone drive you.
