Valeda Photobiomodulation for Dry Macular Degeneration

Retina & Vitreous Consultants of Wisconsin is the first and only practice in the Greater Milwaukee area to offer Valeda Photobiomodulation (PBM), an FDA-approved, non-invasive light therapy for intermediate dry age-related macular degeneration. For patients who have been told there was nothing to do but watch and wait, Valeda offers a new option.

Age-related macular degeneration is the leading cause of vision loss in adults over 50. In the dry form, deposits called drusen accumulate beneath the macula and the light-sensing cells gradually lose function, causing blurred or dim central vision. Until recently, treatment for the intermediate stage was limited to vitamin supplements and monitoring. In its advanced stage, dry AMD progresses to geographic atrophy.

Photobiomodulation uses specific wavelengths of low-level light to stimulate the mitochondria, the energy centers inside retinal cells. This improves cellular energy production, reduces inflammation, and supports the health of the photoreceptors and retinal pigment epithelium. The treatment is painless and does not involve injections, drops, or surgery.

Valeda treatment is delivered in our office. You sit comfortably in front of the device while it delivers light to the eye for a few minutes per session. A full course consists of a series of sessions over several weeks, typically repeated a few times per year to maintain the benefit. Most patients experience no side effects and return to normal activities immediately.

Valeda is intended for patients with intermediate dry AMD who still have relatively good central vision. It is designed to slow disease progression and help preserve vision rather than restore vision already lost, so earlier treatment offers the greatest benefit. Your retina specialist will use OCT and autofluorescence imaging to determine whether you are a candidate.
