Conditions

Acquired Vitelliform Lesions

Round yellowish deposits can form under the retina in adults

Age-Related Macular Degeneration

Age-Related Macular Degeneration has two forms, "dry and wet.”

Age-Related Macular Degeneration- Dry

The most common form, Dry Age-Related Macular Degeneration can cause mild to severe vision loss.

Age-Related Macular Degeneration- Wet

Wet refers to “leakage” or “bleeding” in the macula related to degenerative changes

Branch Retinal Vein Occlusion

A retinal vein occlusion is a blockage in a small blood vessel that carries blood away from the retina

Central Retinal Vein Occlusion

This forms when the main venous drainage system of the retina is blocked.

Central Serous Retinopathy

Clear subretinal fluid forms in the macula causing distortion.

Charles Bonnet Syndrome

Hallucinations occur secondary to functional and advanced vision loss.

Choroidal Detachment

The spongy layer of blood vessels behind the eye becomes can become swollen or filled with blood.

Choroidal Nevus

Just like you can have a freckle on your skin, a nevus behind the retina can form.

Complex Retinal Detachment

Scar tissue and giant retinal tear- associated retinal detachments are more serious, often requiring the use of silicone oil for stabilization.

Congenital X-Linked Retinoschisis

Schisis” or “splitting” of the retina can be inherited or acquired.

Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetes can damage small blood vessels throughout the retina impacting vision

Endophthalmitis

This severe infection often requires vitrectomy and intravitreal antibiotics.

Epiretinal Membrane/Macular Pucker:

Scar tissue can grow over the macula, resulting in distortion and central blur.

Familial Exudative Vitreoretinopathy

Retinal blood vessels do not form normally causing leakage and ischemia.

Symptomatic Floaters

Age related floaters due to vitreous gel aging can be an indication for vitrectomy, particularly if it is impacting your daily activities.

Idiopathic Juxtafoveal Telangiectasias

Tiny “corkscrew” blood vessels can form in the macula, causing central vision loss.

Infectious Retinitis

Viral retinitis can cause permanent vision loss if not addressed quickly.

Intraocular Lens Dislocation

An intra-ocular lens can shift into the vitreous cavity, requiring retinal surgery to fix.

Intraocular Melanoma

Intraocular melanoma is the most common eye cancer in adults.

Histoplasmosis

Retinal scars, atrophy surrounding the optic nerve, and leaky blood vessels called Choroidal Neovascularization (CNV) are the 3 hallmarks

Hyphema

Trapped blood in the front of the eye can cause elevated pressure

Lattice Degeneration

10% of the population has this peripheral retinal thinning, putting them at higher risk for retinal tear or detachment.

Leber Congenital Amaurosis

Some patients may qualify for Luxterna, a gene therapy injected under the retina during vitrectomy

Macular Edema

Cystoid macular edema is a condition when there is swelling in the macula.

Macular Hole

Macular hole development is one of the most common indications for vitrectomy.

Persistent Fetal Vasculature

Vasculature within the eye fails to go away, potentially causing vision loss.

Polyploidal Choroidal Vasculopathy

PCV affects the choroid, and cause severe hemorrhage and swelling in the retina.

Plaquinil

High cumulative doses of Plaquinil can cause bulls-eye maculopathy and vision loss.

Posterior Vitreous Detachment

Typically occurring in your 50s and 60s, a PVD often causes flashes and floaters acutely.

Retained Lens Fragments

A rare complication of cataract surgery likely requires a vitrectomy to prevent inflammation, high pressures, and macular edema.

Retinal Artery Occlusion

Patients with an artery occlusion, or eye “stroke,” need to have an urgent systemic work-up.

Retinal Detachment

Retinal detachments are commonly fixed with vitrectomy, scleral buckle or pneumatic retinopexy

Retinal Tear

A Retinal tear can lead to a retinal detachment if not treated.

Retinal Vein Occlusion

A retinal vein occlusion is a blockage in a small blood vessel that carries blood away from the retina.

Retinitis Pigmentosa

A group of inherited retinal diseases that causes progressive blindness.”

Retinoblastoma

This is the most common primary ocular tumor in infants and children

Retinopathy of Prematurity

ROP can develop in low birthweight and young gestational age infants.

River Blindness/Onchocerciasis

This parasitic infection is more common in developing parts of the world.

Sickle Cell Retinopathy

Sickle cell disease can decrease the perfusion of the retina resulting in the growth of abnormal blood vessels.

Stargardt’s Disease

Stargardt’s is a genetically-linked retinal disorder that occurs in children.

Stickler Syndrome

Stickler’s Syndrome affects collagen in the body, leading to a very high risk of retinal detachment.

Toxoplasmosis

Toxoplasmosis inflammation is caused by a parasite and should be treated by a retinal specialist.

Usher Syndrome

This is the most common genetic condition impacting vision and hearing.

Uveitis

Inflammation in the eye can have a multitude of causes and impact the front, middle and/or back of the eye.

Vitreo-macular Traction Syndrome

Vitreous gel can pull on the macula, causing distortion.
